The first ever Gold’s Gym opened its doors back in the fall season of 1965. This branch was based out of the world famous Venice Beach in Los Angeles, California. Venice Beach was known as “the Mecca of bodybuilding” and one of its usual patrons was no other than action movie star Arnold Schwarzenegger. The beach can be seen in the 1977 film “Pumping Iron”. This movie was able to bring attention to not only Gold’s Gym but also to bodybuilding and physical fitness as a whole. Today the first Gold’s Gym is considered a landmark when it comes to the bodybuilding culture. ESPN.com listed it as one of the 100 most important sports locations.
Gold’s Gym was originally formed by Joe Gold. He sold the company in 1970 and today the company is privately owned. It was bought from its former owner Brockway Moran & Partners by Robert Rowling’s TRT Holdings. The price tag was about $158 million.
The business today licenses its brand name to products like fitness clothing and equipment. The first ever Gold’s Gym logo was a bald-headed weightlifter with a barbell in his hands. This logo was designed by a man named Ric Drasin who happened to be Schwarzenegger’s training partner for several years. Other celebrities who have been Gold’s Gym members at one time are Dwayne Johnson, Jessica Alba, Hilary Swank, Keanu Reeves, Jodie Foster, Tiger Woods and Morgan Freeman.
