A Brief History About Kroger

Back in 1883, a man named Bernard ‘Barney’ Kroger invested all of his savings – a total amount of $372, or $9,400 by today’s standards – and opened a grocery store in Cincinnati. Kroger was the son of a merchant and ran his business believing in the motto of never selling anything that he himself wouldn’t buy.

Kroger believed in going the extra mile to satisfy his customers. He also experimented with producing his own goods like bread. This was so that his customers didn’t have the need to shop at a separate bakery.

In the mid-50s, Kroger began buying supermarket chains once more with the goal of reaching into fresh new markets. In only three months the business had bought three supermarket chains. First Kroger tapped into the Houston, Texas market by buying the Houston store chain Henke & Pillot. A few months later Kroger purchased the 18-store Krambo Food Stores, Inc. which was based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. A month after the Krambo acquisition, Kroger bought the Child’s Food Stores, Inc. based out of Jacksonville, Texas. The Chains brand by that time had already established a presence in Arkansas and Louisiana.
